The Binary Graffiti Club is a social and performative art project custom produced for each city or venue. There are a range of possible artistic outputs that can occur, including wearing hoodies, being in a choir, creating graffiti, workshops and adding to the manifesto. The Binary Graffiti Club becomes a participatory public event creating new narratives for the playful engagement of the environment, encompassing performance, politics and art. The Binary Graffiti Club invites members of the public at each location and for each event.

The Binary Graffiti Club inspires us to see the city as performative canvas to create change. Participants are all wearing especially made hoodies. The walls, pavements, and empty spaces are covered in over 101 unique and different artworks. An extension of the “flaneur” who wanders without aim, The Binary Graffiti Club creates a new sense of urgency and agency as the city is reclaimed for cultural change. The Binary Graffiti Club provides a platform to celebrate the pioneering spirit of digital innovation and culture through creative collision and socially engaged artistic practice.

By taking part in The Binary Graffiti Club and wearing the hoodie you become a single unit of binary data in the larger participatory system. The groups become reformed as a larger entity, a human algorithm that can empower its surroundings. The collective agency aims to demonstrate that we are greater than the sum of our parts.

Exhibition of selected Graffiti and Activisms Selected artworks form an exhibition of photographs, stencils, videos, hoodies and binary code. The selection of artwork represents subliminal messages to reclaim the city and public space as a shared environment which places our youth at the focus of future development. The idea is to inspire young people to see the city as canvas to create change and to see the environment as their city space and to make their "mark" on it. Graffiti has appeared in London, Liverpool, Lincoln, Copenhagen.

Choir for Festivals and Events This vocal performance is based around a series of statements, gathered from the public, that have been translated into binary code. Got something you want to say? Feeling like your voice isn't heard? Say your piece, see it on the streets, hear it sung out loud. The choir sings the binary messages which were submitted from the online surveys and workshops. For festivals and gallery openings the choir can be either organised choirs or members of the public. Choirs have performed in England, Wales, Poland Germany. See here

Workshop to create new futures The Binary Graffiti Club workshop aims to find out what future scenarios the young would like to see and be involved in. The workshops are geared to finding some answers to this question. The result are turned into graffiti. Working in small groups you will be encouraged to think and come up with ideas based on certain scenarios ie, whats the first thing you would do if you were the prime minister. Workshops have taken place at Hackney Quest Youth Centre London, the Barbican Centre in London, The Lowry in Salford.

Please tell us what you want to see written and coded into the streets. Share with us your thoughts and tell us what you want written and made into graffiti.  Please fill in our survey. http://thebinarygraffiticlub.com/survey/781215

Concepts

The project is not prescriptive and doesn’t seek to be didactic but to encourage debate and with a view to conceiving alternative scenarios for a better reality and a bright future. The workshop process leads to a series of texts that act a basis of a new political manifesto, and this material will be used in a series of events that follow, as an expression of this dialogue. Social Interaction and public engagement in the urban space. The Binary Graffiti Club explores themes of control and identity both in the city and in the gallery in response to a sense of disillusionment and lack of trust as well as a general apathy within youth culture The Have and Have Nots. A reclamation of the public domain space. The group engage in and investigate the forgotten / obsolete spaces in the city and seek to rejuvenate them with new meaning. The reclamation of the public domain space is facilitated by marking territory and imparting information through artistic process. Graffiti draws attention to spaces that are somehow neglected in effect disabled. A series of binary messages placed across the city draw attention to this neglect. For example a five a side football pitch for kids that has weeds growing in it surrounded by two major football stadiums. These artworks are made in with binary stencils. (chalk spray removes with rain after a few weeks). ( pdf available for curators)
